"In the blind spots of canonical histories of architecture, we oftentimes find women, whose contributions, especially when collaborative and beyond designing buildings, have not always found visibility in a profession that celebrates individual “genius” designers. In this talk, I will focus on the period after 1968, when architecture went through a moment of critical self-reflection, opening the field to an expanded understanding of the role of the architect and architecture. And yet, to foreground the contributions of women who did adopt such other roles, several hurdles are to be navigated including persistent conventions regarding authorship and invisibilities surrounding expanded contributions to the built environment. For this talk I will draw on past and ongoing research that has recently also brought me to Norway, via Italy, namely the International Laboratory for Architecture and Urban Design (ILA&UD) starting in 1976.” - Isabelle Doucet

Isabelle Doucet is a professor of architectural humanities at the School of Architecture and Landscape at the University of Sheffield, UK. Her current research focuses on women in architecture after 1968, the portrayal of women in architecture as role models, and environmental storytelling. Her books include The Practice Turn in Architecture. Brussels after 1968 (2015) and Activism at Home. Architects Dwelling between Politics, Aesthetics, and Resistance (with Janina Gosseye, 2021).
