The definition of Architecture was made the moment someone saw the need to distinguish buildings with perceived intrinsic value from those deemed merely functional or vernacular. While these definitions have evolved, they continue to dictate how we engage with our built environment.
In this lecture, we will examine the consequences of this need to define some things as architecture and others as non-architecture; and based on that formulate a practical guide to experiencing places. From 5,000-year-old burial mounds of Ireland via nomadic settlements of the Rendile tribe in Kenya to north African, Norwegian west coast and Gujarat domestic architecture, we will discuss how the act of place-making through spatial configurations is a matter of universal language of human experience. Through the use of our own individual subjective reading and with the support of the collective we can become participants in a continuous history of making home in the world.
Organised by Bergen School of Architecture Studio for Theory and History.
